There are lots of things all around us
0:07
fighting things that surround us. But
0:10
how does it work? Do you know?
0:14
>> How is it made?
0:15
>> Do you know things that go up, things

that go down, things that go up, things
0:22
that go around with special cameras to
0:25
show you inside. It's going to be a big
0:29
surprise.

>> Hello, I'm Maddie and today I'm finding
0:45
out about some exciting things we might
0:48
see and do at Christmas time. What fun
0:51
things do you like to do at Christmas? I
0:53
like to spend time with family and
0:55
friends.
0:58
Making cards and little gifts for them
1:01
and wrapping presents can be really fun,
1:03
too. On Christmas Eve, we might get a
1:06
special visitor. Can you guess who that
1:09
is from this sound?
1:13
That's right, Father Christmas and his
1:16
reindeer.
1:17
There's something special about one of
1:19
Father Christmas's reindeer. Do you know
1:21
what it is? It name is Rudolph. And they
1:25
say it has a red nose. Rudolph the
1:28
red-nosed reindeer. But do reindeer
1:31
really have red noses? And how do they
1:34
stay warm in the cold weather? Let's
1:37
find out.
1:40
How does it work?
1:43
>> Reindeer.
1:45
>> To find out how reindeer work, I've come
1:47
here to a farm
1:50
that has its very own herd of reindeer.
1:53
Hello. Happy Christmas.
1:59
[Music]
2:01
This is Farmer Jenny and she looks after
2:04
them. Reindeer come from parts of the
2:06
world like Greenland, Alaska, and
2:09
Northern Europe. All of these places
2:12
have a really cold climate. And reindeer
2:15
are brilliant at living in the cold and
2:17
staying warm. And they do it in some
2:20
really interesting ways. When we breathe
2:22
in on a cold day, the cold air goes down
2:25
into our lungs and then it's warmed by
2:27
our bodies. So when we breathe the warm
2:30
air out on a cold day, the moisture in
2:33
the air cools down really quickly and
2:36
that turns it into tiny droplets of
2:38
water. We call it condensing and it
2:41
looks like a misty cloud.
2:44
But when a reindeer breathes in and out,
2:46
their bodies work in a very special way.
2:51
This here is Blue. And Blue is a very
2:54
friendly reindeer.
2:57
You must never go close to an animal
2:58
without a grown-up. But farmer Jenny has
3:01
given me special permission to go close
3:03
to Blue.
3:05
Can you see Blue's nose? Blue has really
3:09
big nostrils for breathing air in.
3:14
Reindeer, like Blue, have a special way
3:17
of changing the temperature of the air
3:20
before it reaches their lungs. So, they
3:22
can stay outside and breathe the cold
3:24
air all winter long. But to find out how
3:27
that works, I think we need to take a
3:29
closer look. When the weather is frosty
3:32
and cold, the air is cold, too. The
3:35
reindeer breathe the cold air in through
3:37
big nostrils. Inside their nostrils, the
3:40
air passes over bones called turbines.
3:43
These bones are covered in a layer of
3:45
blood vessels and then by a wet layer
3:48
called mucus. The blood vessels are
3:51
warm. So when the cold air passes over
3:54
the blood, the air warms up. The wet
3:57
mucus layer adds root to the cold air
3:59
too, making it more moist before it goes
4:01
down into the lungs. Here, oxygen from
4:04
the air is used by the reindeer to
4:06
breathe.
4:07
When the reindeer breathes the warm air
4:09
out, it passes through the turbanets
4:11
where heat and moisture are taken out of
4:13
the air, making it cool and drier again.
4:16
Then it goes out of the nose and a
4:18
special heater at the tip keeps the nose
4:20
the same temperature all the time. So
4:22
that's why we might say that reindeers
4:24
have a red nose. And this is lovely
4:28
Stella. To see a reindeer's nose in
4:30
action, I'm going to use one of my
4:32
special cameras and look at Stella's
4:35
nose. This is a special thermal imaging
4:39
camera and it will show us how hot and
4:41
cold things are using different colors.
4:44
Hot things will show us red, orange, or
4:46
white on my special camera and cooler
4:48
things will look blue and purple. What
4:50
color do you think Stella's nose is
4:52
going to be?
4:54
Wow, look at Stella's nose.
4:58
Can you see her nostrils are bright
5:01
white? That means they are much, much
5:05
hotter than the rest of her face. So,
5:08
Stella's special nose heater is working.
5:11
Good girl. There's something else that
5:13
keeps reindeer warm, too. Reindeer have
5:16
thick, furry coats to keep them warm.
5:19
It's their insulation. It's a little bit
5:22
like how we've put a coat on,
5:25
but a reindeer's fur insulates them in a
5:27
very clever way. They have two types of
5:29
hair, fine hair and a type of hair
5:32
called hollow hair. Inside each hollow
5:35
hair, there are lots of little pockets
5:38
or spaces, and these trap warm air
5:41
inside them, which helps to keep the
5:43
reindeer cozy and warm.
5:46
To show you how this works, I've made a
5:48
model. I've got a cardboard kitchen roll
5:51
tube, and inside it is something called
5:54
bubble packaging. Got some bubble
5:56
packaging here. And can you see inside
5:58
each of these little bubbles, there is
6:01
air that is trapped inside them. If this
6:04
was a strand of holo reindeer hair, then
6:07
the inside would look a bit like bubble
6:10
packaging. Inside each hollow hair,
6:12
there are lots of bubbles that trap warm
6:14
air inside them, and this helps to keep
6:16
the reindeer warm.
6:21
My favorite fact about reindeer is that
6:22
when they walk, their legs make a
6:24
clicking sound.
6:29
Did you hear it?
6:32
I loved finding out how a reindeer's
6:34
nose and their fur work to help them
6:36
survive the cold winter weather. What
6:39
was your favorite part?
6:41
Was it seeing Stella the reindeer's nose
6:43
glowing through my special thermal
6:45
camera? Did you hear the clicking sound
6:47
the reindeer made as it walked?
6:50
[Music]
6:52
What about their special holo hair that
6:54
traps the heat in it to keep the
6:56
reindeer extra warm?
7:01
[Music]
7:05
There are so many fun things we can do
7:07
and make at Christmas time. I really
7:09
enjoy making my own Christmas
7:11
decorations.
7:12
[Music]
7:18
This decoration looks a bit like the
7:20
reindeer we met. I bought this one for
7:22
myself as a special treat. But do you
7:25
know how decorations like this reindeer
7:28
one are made? Let's find out.
7:33
How is it made?
7:35
>> Christmas decorations.
7:39
To find out how a Christmas decoration
7:41
is made, I've come here to a Christmas
7:43
decoration workshop.
7:45
[Music]
7:50
The decorations they make in this
7:52
workshop are all made from wood. Big
7:55
sheets of wood like this. This wood is
7:58
called birchwood and it comes from a
8:01
birch tree. This here is the bark of a
8:04
birch tree. The trees come from a forest
8:06
where they grow trees for us to use. And
8:09
for every tree that's cut down, they'll
8:11
plant a new one so we don't run out.
8:16
What she Christmas decoration do you
8:17
think we're making today? It has two
8:20
feet,
8:22
[Music]
8:25
a head,
8:28
a body, and some antlers.
8:33
That's right. It's a reindeer.
8:36
This is Caroline and she designs the
8:39
Christmas decorations here at the
8:40
workshop. She's using something on the
8:43
computer called CAD. And CAD means
8:46
computer aided design.
8:50
Caroline is drawing the five reindeer
8:52
body parts on the computer with a
8:54
special pen. The image appears on the
8:56
screen and is sent from the computer
8:57
here
8:59
to here. This is called a laser cutting
9:03
machine. and it's going to cut out our
